Inspirations from other games

The gameplay style of my game will borrow from Streets of Rage. I am using this sprite sheet from that game to plan my animations for the game.

Other inspirations for the game in other areas are the menus.

I want to have a PS1 style menu system with large rotating models for the options. For example Tomb Raider inventory system.

Or the large icons from Wipeout.

Mood Boards

Because of my Cyberpunk theme, it is important to get the look and feel of this genre correct.

I have created some mood boards to help with this process.

Neon is very important to the Cyberpunk aethetic

And I want an arcade to feature somewhere in the design

Mind maps

For my Final Project, it was decided that I would make a Cyberpunk themed scrolling beat em up in the style of games like Streets of Rage.

I created some Mind Maps to come up with some ideas.

I created the first mind map to help me remember all the different beat em up games to draw inspiration.

Then I created a Mind Map to help with deciding characters, enemies and locations.

Project outline

I have decided that my game will be a Cyberpunk styled 2.5D scrolling Beat'em-up for example Streets of Rage.

I have decided on this because I like the game genre and also the aesthetic of Cyberpunk.

My preliminary list of goals are as follows:

Aesthetic theme
Custom characters (2-4)
Various assets
Varied enemies
Bosses?

The characters may be very difficult to complete given the time scale, but I would like to have them in.

Boss characters will most likely not happen due to time constraints.

For Quality Assurance, I will ask friends to play my game at various points in development and report back on any bugs they find.

Project Brief

Purpose of this assignment:

The module focuses on the development and progression of essential skills in decision-making, problem solving and communication within group activities. Skills and knowledge will be integral for use in completing a realistic project.

Students will continue to elaborate on and refine the skills that they have learnt throughout the year.

This module also allows the students to develop their presentation skills in showcasing their abilities in a formal way for portfolio and on marketplaces. This module aims to be an overall project that the student will develop presenting all skills and knowledge from previous years.

In this module students learn and develop skills that will enable them to:

· Work effectively in a team or individually with roles for a project team to produce a game.

· Reflect on their own personal skills and critical attributes valuable to a team in their role as leader

· Consider a range of established techniques and select an appropriate one to provide solutions to problems as they present

· Work within a team towards a common goal within the scope of their chosen discipline

Scenario:

Continuing from the previous modules you should have a good foundation of game mechanics to take into a more finalised development project. Taking on such a task requires professionalism and dedication to the project in hand. You will be required to adhere to strict rules of recording updates on the project. This must be demonstrated on a weekly basis and recorded on a Blog. Weekly meetings with tutors must be applied and a separate attendance register will be completed.

Analysis of Brief

This unit seems to be designed to test the student's ability to work on a long term project with time management and reporting back to a team lead (this role taken by a tutor).

This seems to try to emulate what working in a team on a project would be like in the industry, though in this case the student is taking on all roles simultaneously: Producer, Designer, Artist and Programmer.

I feel this could be a very challenging unit, especially around time constraints and time management with the student performing so many tasks.
